Installing a chain link fence is a rewarding home improvement project that

While it may seem like a daunting task, a chain link fence is modular and
straightforward, making it suitable for a competent DIY homeowner. The key to a
successful installation lies in careful planning, accurate measurements, and a
systematic approach. By following a step-by-step guide, you can achieve a

The first step in the process is planning and laying out the fence line.
Before digging, it is essential to contact local utility companies to mark
underground lines to prevent accidents. Once the path is clear, mark the
location of the terminal posts (corner, end, and gate posts) and line posts.
Accurate measurement here is crucial; the distance between line posts is
typically determined by the width of the mesh fabric, usually around 10 feet.
Ensuring that the posts are set in a straight line will dictate the final
appearance and stability of the fence.
Setting the posts is the most labor-intensive part of the project. Terminal
posts must be set in concrete footings that extend below the frost line to
prevent heaving. The depth of the hole should typically be one-third the length
of the post. Line posts can sometimes be driven directly into the ground using a
post driver, but setting them in concrete provides a much sturdier fence. It is
vital to ensure that all posts are plumb (perfectly vertical) and that terminal
posts are set at the correct height to accommodate the height of the chain link
fabric and the top rail.
With the posts set, the next phase involves attaching the hardware and
fabric. Begin by installing tension bands and caps on the terminal posts. Unroll
the chain link mesh along the outside of the fence line and slide a tension bar
through the end of the mesh. Hook the tension bar to the tension bands on the
terminal post and pull the mesh taut using a fence puller or "come-along" winch.
Once the mesh is tight, tie it to the line posts using wire ties, spacing them
evenly to keep the fabric straight and secure.
Finally, installing the top rail and gate completes the project. Slide the
top rail through the loops (or "tops") of the chain link fabric and secure them
to the line post caps. If the ground is uneven, you may need to cut the top rail
to fit the contour. For the gate, hang it on the hinges first, ensuring it
swings freely and clears the ground, then install the latch. A final inspection
to ensure all hardware is tight and the mesh is secure will ensure your new
fence is ready for use. With patience and attention to detail, any homeowner can
successfully install a chain link fence that adds value and security to their
home.
